Since I'm not a veterinarian, my review will be based on the information gathered over the years and my personal experience. If you suspect your dog has a problem, don't delay, get your best friend in the car and head for your veterinarian. You can doctor yourself, wife/husband and kids but don't take a chance with your white furry "guy."
Anyone that has been around Bichons at some point will notice them chewing, licking or scratching themselves a great deal. My veterinarian told me it seemed to him that all white dogs have a problem. There could be many reasons for the skin problems: allergies to things in the house, exposure to chemicals, grass, trees, fleas and so on. Finding the problem may be a simple change of diet or a very complex problem. Again, be guided by your veterinarian; they have seen it all or know someone who can help. For chewing, there are sprays that make those spots taste so bad, they leave the area alone or at least until the spray wears off. Try a different shampoo, but make sure Mr. Ball of fur is thoroughly rinsed.
Dental care seems to be one of those areas we forget. As we all know from personal experience, let dental care go, and we are in for many problems and pain. The same is true for our dogs. There are several ways to keep the teeth and mouth in good shape. The recommended way is to brush your dog's teeth. Don't use a human toothbrush; go to the pet store, and purchase a brush made for dogs along with the dog toothpaste. Start easy or you'll never catch him again if you have a toothbrush in hand, and also, you may loose a finger. Your veterinarian will tell you; brushing your dog's teeth will save many dental problems and also save you money on vet bills. In addition to the teeth problems, dental problems may lead to other health problems such as bladder and kidney infections. When your Bichon is in for the annual check up, ask your veterinarian to check the teeth. Your Bichon may need his teeth cleaned.
